Assam Agriculture University
In 1969 Assam Agriculture University (AAU) was established. The campus is situated in Jorhat, Assam. Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat is the first of its kind in India across the entire North-Eastern region. The principal aim of this university is to generate globally competitive human resources in the agricultural sector. It currently has five schools, six Regional Research Stations for Agriculture (RARS), six Commodity Research Centers and nineteen Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) across the state with Jorhat headquarters. Assam University of Agriculture conducts programs in Veterinary Science, Home Science, Fishery Science & Agricultural Science. Early in 1897, the embryo of agricultural research in the state of Assam was established with the establishment of the Upper Shillong Experimental Farm (now in Meghalaya) just after about a decade of agricultural department formation in 1882. In the dawn of the twentieth century, however, the seeds of agricultural research in today's Assam were seeded with the establishment of two Rice Experimental Stations, one at Karimganj in Barak Valley in 1913 and the other at Titabor in Brahmaputra Valley in 1923.
